Monster High Doll Mod - Helena by tbdoll Monster High Doll Mod - Helena by tbdoll
My second Monster High custom! For this one I took a Gloom Beach Frankie Stein and turned her into Helena, from the My Chemical Romance video of the same name.

I felt like Frankie had the perfect face mold for Helena and this was my first try completely repainting a doll. I used the airbrush that I got from *Shoutai for this. The paint seemed to take to her pretty well, although it is sort of cracked on the side of her face and chipping around her joints. I also discovered that trying to put her in the stand without any clothing over the paint caused the paint to be scraped off by the stand. Luckily her dress covers this.

The nice thing about painting the doll first is that colored pencil takes to the face LOADS better when there's paint coating it first.

Anyway, Helena is wearing a dress and veil I made out of an old homecoming dress I got from the thrift store. She's also wearing a dark brown liv wig.

Her roses are hand made out of sculpey.

Her left (our right) shoe came out loads better than the other one. You can't see in any of the pictures I took but the right shoe does not actually have a heel. Oops.

I really like your custom dolls! I'm want to see if I can make one into my Killjoy Rock Candy. However, I have two questions for you.

1. What kind of paint do you use to paint the doll's face/skin?

And 2. I'm not quite sure which doll has the right face mold for Candy. Using the commission you made for me as a reference, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks! For my Helena I used just white airbrush paint, and for my Captain Phantom I'm working on now I used thinned out acrylic paint for their skin tone. You have to be sure to seal it between coats though and know the joints will likely chip.

I think maybe a Frankie Stein or a Ghoulia Yelps might work. Depends on which jawline you prefer. I'd say to practice on some dollar store dolls first, though.

Alright. I also asked about paint for like making their eyes and other facial features.

Their facial features are also done with acrylic, although mostly pastels are used for shading and then some colored pencil.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I hope I'll be able to do it (I'm a fail at drawing/painting free-hand, so wish me luck).

Near christmas the dollar stores have packs of multiple cheap dolls like 5 dolls for $10 and stuff, they're ideal for practice. To work out the face sculpt look at some images of the dolls on google images. The C.A cupid doll has a similar hair length and colour to rock candy judging from the image in your gallery. You'd have to add in the black parts of the hair though. Her sculpt though isn't the best. Try looking at the sculpts for draculara Cleo de nile, abbey or ghoulia as they're the easiest to find and are the cheapest too. Try the skull shores range or the sleep over ones they're about $20
